Why I Love Commercial Property
My love of Commercial Property started on a Dairy Farm in Rural Waikato
My Dad is a retired dairy farmer and he taught me from when I was very young the value of owning land. I loved traipsing over the farm, my golden lab trailing behind me and birds swooping overhead. There was wild mint growing under the hedges, rolling green fields beneath my gumboots and blue sky above. My siblings and I made forts in the haybarn and helped Mum feed and care for the calves. Dad took us out on the tractor to feed out and we had turns hosing down the cow shed at the end of milking. There’s nothing more exhilarating than a high pressure hose when you are barely strong enough to hold it.
Like all farmers my Dad knew that the land was more than just a way of making money and he cared for it the same way he cared for his animals. He maintained his own buildings and machinery and tended the pastures, hedges and fences. That farm was the first commercial property I ever experienced and I was so lucky it was my home.
I grew up and left home for the city. I was silly in my twenties, as most twenty-somethings are, and brought a leasehold apartment in Auckland’s viaduct. Dad didn’t approve but he believed in letting me make my own mistakes. I learned the hard way one more reason that owning land is important. Ground Rent.
When I started my career in commercial property management, it felt like I had found a piece of my childhood home. Commercial Properties and Farms have a lot of similarities and need a lot of the same care. Both have plant and equipment that needs to be maintained. Both have buildings used for producing products. Both are the home of business, and both recognise the need to care for the environment. This is why I love Commercial Property.
I like to think I take care of commercial properties the same way Dad took care of the farm. If something happens to the water you fix it immediately because thirsty cows quickly become sick. You maintain the plant and equipment to make sure it continues to produce product. You take care of the land and the environment to ensure it will provide for generations to come. You keep buildings clean, safe and well maintained because they are essential to the businesses that operate from them.
